Recommendations

In this section, learn about:

  • How and where Aspen generates recommendations to users

Aspen Discovery makes sure that reader's advisory tools are always a few clicks away! Learn where users can discover new titles throughout the interface, and how Aspen generates these recommendations.

How Recommendations are Generated from Ratings

For the first 5 titles a user rates Aspen will suggest:

  • 1 like title if they rated an item a 3
  • 2 like titles if they rated it a 4
  • 3 like titles in they rated it a 5

This gives users a list of about 10-15 item recommendations from the get-go.

From that point on, Aspen will begin to look at all the titles the user has rated to populate future ratings, so that it is continually updating/changing recommendations as interests change.

You Might Also Like - Recommendations in Checked Out Titles

In My Account > Checked Out Titles, users will see a You Might Also Like button. This will provide recommendations similar to the title checked out (similar author, subject, etc.).

When the user clicks on You Might Also Like, they will be presented with three recommendations. These recommendations are based on your library's collections and will only show users available items.

By clicking on More Info, the user will be taken to the grouped work record to see more about the item, available formats, and copy information.

If the user has reading history enabled, Aspen will not show any title on the reading history in You Might Also Like.

A note for consortia: the recommendations are generated based on availability across collections available on your entire server.

Note: You Might Also Like will also show in Reading History if enabled

While You Wait - Recommendations in Holds

In My Account > Titles on Hold users will see a button under their hold modification options entitled While You Wait.

When the user clicks on While You Wait, they will be presented with three recommendations. These recommendations are based on your library's collections and will only show users available items available somewhere in your system.

By clicking on one of the recommended items, the user will be taken to the grouped work record to see more about the item, the formats the item comes in and its availability.

If the user has reading history enabled, Aspen will not show any title on the reading history in While You Wait.

A note for consortia: the recommendations are generated based on availability across collections available on your entire server.

Recommended For You Browse Category

If the library has the Recommended for You patron engagement browse category turned on (the other patron engagement browse categories are "Your Lists" and "Your Saved Searches"), users will see a Recommended for You browse category that is automatically generated after users have rated at least five titles.

See below to learn how to set up this Recommended for You browse category for users.

See Recommendations in My Account

Users can see Aspen-generated recommendations in My Account.

Once users have rated at least five titles, a Recommended For You section will show on the user's main Account Summary page.

Users can also go to My Account > Recommended For You on the left-side menu to see a more detailed list.

In My Account > Recommended For You, users will see a list of their recommendations. For each listing, users will be able to see availability, read a description, place a hold, and even immediately access if it is an available econtent item.

Don't Recommend in My Account

A user can click the "Don't Recommend" button if they do not like the item Aspen is recommending in My Account > Recommended for you.

If a user accidentally clicked Don't Recommend for a title and/or they would like to see a list of titles they have marked as Don't Recommend, they can click My Account > Titles Your Recommend > Titles You Don't Want Recommended

Note: This section will only appear once the user has clicked Don't Recommend for at least one item.

Users can click "Clear" on the specific title they want to undo.

Administration Settings

Enable the "Recommended for You" Browse Category

Libraries in new implementations will have the "Recommended for You" browse category set up by default. If for some reason the Recommended for You browse category is not set up or you want to remove it, go to Aspen Administration > Local Catalog Enrichment > Browse Categories.

If you don't see it by searching for it, click Add New.

Fill in the following:

  1. Label - Recommended for You
  2. textId - system_recommended_for_you
  3. Share With - Everyone

Leave everything else as is and save.

Then, go to Aspen Administration > Local Catalog Enrichment > Browse Category Groups and add the  Recommended for You browse category.

Once this is set up, leave as is. Aspen will automatically show this browse category to users as soon as they have rated at least 5 titles.
